Growing up in the neighborhoods where we grew up there were no swimming pools in our backyards. There were no YMCA’s with even in-door swimming pools. A lot of times we relied on our resources, water hoses and fire hydrants. The fire hydrant kept us cool during the sweltering heat of the Detroit summers. Within this piece is two light sources on each side of the street purposely done to represent the blocks that I spent most of my childhood. West Grand and Clements Street are around the corner from each other. My earliest childhood was spent on West Grand until 1992 when my grandparents moved around the corner on Clements Street where I would spend the rest of my childhood. "Open Hydrants" is 1 of 13 pieces from my 3rd solo show, Detroit: A Childhood Nostalgia in Pigments. The show is inspired by memories of growing up in Detroit as a kid.
