This piece reflects a time for me as a kid growing up in the early 90’s where fashion incorporated more socially conscious themes and awareness of the times. A far contrast from today where designer clothes is the cool thing to wear today. Back then, it was cool to wear an X cap, a black medallion, and African American heroes on our chest. In 1992, Director, Spike Lee released the pivotal masterpiece, X which told the story of the iconic, intelligent and charismatic leader, Malcolm X. As an 11-year-old kid, I rocked my X cap with pride not fully aware of the impact of the man behind the X stitched on my cap. Another influential fashion piece for me was the old English D, the logo of the Detroit Tigers. Being from Detroit, there is a bit of bias when it comes to the most iconic baseball hat logo debate. Popularized by pop culture stars like actor, Tom Selleck, and rapper, Ice Cube, the old English D was synonymous with being cool, fly, fresh and of course from Detroit. "D Hat & X Caps" is 1 of 13 pieces from my 3rd solo show, Detroit: A Childhood Nostalgia in Pigments. The show is inspired by memories of growing up in Detroit as a kid.
