I was once told that not enough emphasis is put in depicting young black boys smiling and having fun. That opinion resonated with me, and I began to reflect on my childhood. Growing up with my sister, cousins, and friends we experienced fun through playing games, talking, joking and laughing. Depicted in this piece is my youngest son, Jordan, who is the epitome of Black Boy Joy. "Black Boy Joy" is 1 of 13 pieces from my 3rd solo show, Detroit: A Childhood Nostalgia in Pigments. The show is inspired by memories of growing up in Detroit as a kid.
